20mph speed limit to be rolled out across Hackney

The following press release was issued by Hackney Council this afternoon:

Hackney People on Bikes welcomes any measure that works towards safer streets for everyone, especially after the recent scandalously high number of people killed by motor vehicles on Hackney roads. However, for it be effective in reducing road deaths and injuries, it will need to be rigorously enforced, something that has been notable by its absence to date on the roads currently subject to the limit. We do not feel that a 20mph limit alone is sufficient to ensure the safety of people on bikes on Hackney’s main roads and it would not eliminate the requirement for properly designed protected space and the redesign of junctions to separate bikes from HGVs.
